# Substrate Independent This term refers to the believe that human consciousness is not dependent on the the organic bundle of nerves and synapses that is our brain. Believing consciousness to be "substrate independent", means that if you were replicate the same set of connection that you find in a human brain, but those connections were made in computer hardware, or software, you would still be able to replicate the consciousness of the original organic brain.
